Message The "huge gaps" as you call them are closed by sacrifical strips that are installed for track days.

Even with the gaps (they are less than 1 inch), the ground effects still can be felt in as little as 30 mph.
(By the way, in the pictures, the car is unoccupied, the gap is less with the driver, and underway.)
Road Testing determined that 30 mph number.
When taking a normal curve on the freeway, the sideskirts can be felt (and heard) deflecting out of the way.
Which means that the ground effects (i.e. front wing, rear wing, side skirts and rear diffuser) are at 70 mph, overpowering the OEM springs / sway bars.

What you are not accounting for is the front wing design and rear diffuser's ability to make down-force, of which has unrestricted airflow from under the car.

There's a helluva lot of engineering and analysis that went into designing this Aero package, AND to make it all work together.
I designed the Rear Diffuser and the Spiroid rear wing to work together, using SolidWorks (SPO2007), and used COSMOS Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to optimize the design.
(i.e. systems integration approach was utilized)

I'm looking forward to taking the car out for some track "testing", hopefully, someone with an unmodified car will be available as well for comparitive lap times...
